Local Info & Links

Città della Pieve, although a small town, is very well served with restaurants and shops. Within the medieval walls, there are 2 supermarkets, approximately 20 restaurants, several banks & ATMs, a variety of specialised shops including one selling the most delicious hand made fresh pasta & 2 artisan butchers. There is also a hospital & a pharmacy. The small teatro, (opera house) built in 1830 which recently had a 10year renovation, is absolutely delightful – local posters will tell you if a show is on and do go if you can as the theatre is a jewel of a public space.

Città della Pieve hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year including several food festivals plus the renowned medieval festival the Palio dei Terzieri which runs over 12 days in mid-August. It is home to Umbria’s most famous Renaissance artist ‘Il Perugino’. There is a well set out walking trail  known as the ‘Arcobaleno’ plus a tourist office.  The smallest street in Italy is in Citta della Pieve!

In the surrounding area, the towns of Orvieto, Siena, Assisi, Perugia and Montepulciano are all close and visiting them is a wonderful way to spend the day (Orvieto, Siena & Perugia are accessible by public transport). For those wishing to spend a few weeks improving their Italian speaking skills, Montepulciano also has one of the best Italian schools in the country, ‘Il Sasso’, www.ilsasso.com and is a very pleasant 35minutes drive each way. I can personally recommend this language school having spent several thoroughly enjoyable weeks there in March 2012 and I intend to revisit on a regular basis.
